Healthcare provider evaluating leg symptoms associated with sciatic nerve irritation

If you suffer with pain in the sciatic nerve, chiropractic care can offer relief for this excruciating condition.  The sciatic nerve runs from your lower back, over your hips and buttocks and down each leg.  Sciatica is a condition in which compression at some point on the nerve causes shooting pain down one side.  The pain can occur at varying levels, causing difficulty in mobility for people suffering with the condition.

Causes of Sciatica

There are many different causes of sciatica.  Perhaps most common is a herniated disc in the spine.  Herniated discs occur when the cartilage between bones in the spine slip out of place.  This causes irritation of nerves along the pathway.  Many activities like lifting objects, sports and unexpected jarring movements can cause a herniated disc.

Other conditions can cause irritation of the sciatic nerve as well.  Some common physical ailments that go hand-in-hand with sciatica are as follows:

  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Tumors and Cysts on the Spine

Courses of Treatment

Usually a trip to the doctor for this type of pain will result in various x-rays and MRIs to diagnose the condition.  Traditional medical doctors may prescribe medications and refer patients to physical therapy.  Sometimes the spine is injected with corticosteroids.  In extreme cases, surgery can also be a recommended option.  Generally, patients suffering with sciatica will go to extreme lengths to experience relief.

Chiropractic Options

Rather than take dangerous medications, experience ongoing injections or undergo a dangerous surgical procedure, chiropractic care can provide a solution for sciatica sufferers.  Spinal adjustments can increase mobility and improve overall physical functioning.  Pain of sciatica has been shown to decrease significantly with ongoing treatments for approximately 50% of patients.  It seems that the severity of the sciatic pain is a definite factor in the success of chiropractic adjustment to aid sciatica relief.

Acupuncture for Sciatic Pain Relief

Sciatica occurs because of structural damage to discs in the spinal column.  Thus, acupuncture will not treat the underlying cause of the condition.  However, acupuncture used in concert with chiropractic, hot and cold treatment, stretching exercises and other natural solutions can offer relief in the treatment of this incredibly painful condition.  Acupuncture stimulates blood flow and signals muscles to relax, creating an environment for healing in the body.

How Sciatica Is Evaluated

Sciatica describes symptoms related to irritation of the sciatic nerve or its contributing nerve roots, not a single diagnosis. An evaluation may examine strength, reflexes, sensation, walking, spinal movement, and positions that change symptoms. The pattern helps distinguish nerve-related pain from hip, muscle, joint, or vascular problems that can feel similar.

What Recovery Often Looks Like

Many cases improve with time and conservative management, but recovery is rarely perfectly linear. Symptoms may centralize toward the back before fully resolving, or flare after an activity increase. Track leg pain, numbness, strength, walking tolerance, sleep, and function. Worsening weakness deserves prompt reassessment.

Activity and Exercise Considerations

Prolonged bed rest is generally not helpful for routine sciatica. Comfortable movement and gradual activity can support recovery, but exercises should match the symptom pattern. A movement that helps one person may aggravate another. Stop and seek guidance when an exercise causes increasing leg symptoms, new numbness, or weakness.

When Sciatica May Need Urgent Care

Seek urgent evaluation for new bowel or bladder dysfunction, numbness in the saddle area, rapidly worsening weakness, fever, significant trauma, or severe symptoms affecting both legs. These warning signs require medical assessment and should not be managed only with routine conservative care.

Questions to Ask About a Sciatica Care Plan

Ask which finding suggests nerve irritation, whether strength and sensation are normal, and what activities are safe. Clarify the expected recovery timeline and the point at which imaging or referral would be considered. A good plan should teach you how to respond to flare-ups and should change when leg symptoms or function are not improving.
